Time has the power to heal some problems but, unfortunately, not all life issues can be resolved by waiting them out. When California couples decide to end their marriages, they often want to bring about the ends of their relationships without any extra delay. For those who choose divorce mediation, there can be a desire to try and address every possible divorce issue during a couple’s first mediation session.
While every divorce mediation situation is different, some couples may require multiple sessions in order to achieve suitable resolutions to the ends of their marriages. In some cases, a couple may simply not have enough energy to untangle all aspects of their married lives in a single sitting; in other cases, a couple may need time to think and regroup as the challenging decisions of the divorce confront them during the mediation process.
Mediation sessions are sometimes limited, depending upon the schedules of the mediator and the marital partners. Initial meetings can involve classifying the matters that the couple must work through and determining what data they require in order to make good decisions about those matters. Later meetings can use the subjects and information gathered between sessions in order to help divorcing parties make responsible determinations regarding property division matters, child custody and support arrangements and other critical decisions.
While divorce mediation can be a good way for couples who have maintained respectful relationships to bring about the ends of their marriages, there are still many emotional issues that can come up during the mediation process. Having multiple sessions over a period of time can allow divorcing parties to pace themselves as they separate their lives from those of their soon-to-be ex-spouses. A divorce should not be rushed; the manner in which couples end their legal relationships can have lasting repercussions on their lives as single individuals.
