Johnny Depp, Amber Heard head for high asset divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 9, 2016 | Firm News, High Asset Divorce |

Johnny Depp is a popular actor who, as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, has entertained California residents for a number of years. Just last year he married Amber Heard, a fellow actor, but their union was not to last. Heard recently filed for divorce from Depp and alleged that he had subjected her to physical abuse.

Domestic violence allegations are only one of the many issues that Depp and Heard will have to contend with as they wrap up their marriage. They will also have to determine how to divide their wealth. As the pair has no children between them, they will not have to engage in child custody or support negotiations.

Both actors undoubtedly came into the marriage with their own wealth, though it is presumed that Depp’s financial position is more established than Heard’s. Due to the short duration of their marriage and their residence in the community property state of California, there may not be many marital assets to divide in this high asset divorce. However, Heard’s claims of abuse may not only bolster her claims that she should receive spousal support from Depp but also that her support should be more than what she could receive without them.

It is possible that Depp and Heard will settle the financial terms of their divorce out of the public’s view in private negotiations. If that is the case, it may not be possible to know what, if any, support Heard will receive. However, the many issues that will impact the outcome of this divorce may resonate with readers of this family law blog. Individuals who have questions about divorce, support, and property matters may contact their family law attorneys for specific guidance.
